Damp basement and sloping foundation walls repaired in Val-Joli, Quebec
Challenge
At this property in Val-Joli, several signs pointed to gradual deterioration of the basement. The occupants noticed frequent water leaks after heavy rains, persistent humidity in the air, and an increasingly noticeable musty odor. Some surfaces also showed signs of moisture and condensation, making the space less comfortable and increasing the risk of mold.
At the same time, a significant structural issue was identified during the inspection: the foundation walls were leaning inward. This was caused by pressure from the water-saturated soil outside, creating continuous stress on the concrete walls. Without intervention, this type of movement can progress and further compromise the stability of the foundation.
Our analysis identified several factors contributing to the problem:
- Water accumulation around the foundation
- High hydrostatic pressure on the walls
- Inadequate management of interior drainage
- Water vapor migration into the basement
- Initial structural displacement of the foundation walls
Solution
To ensure a lasting solution, our team at Systèmes Sous-sol Québec carried out a comprehensive project combining drainage, moisture control, and structural stabilization.
The work performed included:
- Installation of the WaterGuard interior drainage system to capture water at the foundation level
- Installation of a SuperSump sump pump to efficiently remove accumulated water
- Installation of an IceGuard outlet to prevent system blockages during the winter
- Installation of the CleanSpace Wall system to reduce humidity and improve the basement’s indoor environment
- Stabilization of the leaning walls using the PowerBrace system to reinforce the structure and limit any future movement
Following the work, the basement is now better protected against water infiltration and moisture problems. The foundation walls have been stabilized, and the interior space now offers a drier, healthier, and safer environment for occupants.
